Villa il Poggiolino is the ideal location for excursions all over Italy.

Siena

Surrounded by its original city walls, represents a living example of medieval town. It is grown on three hills from which take origin roads and  alleys to form a urban geography formed by seventeen “contrade” - quarters - , the same which take part to the Palio, famous horse race of medieval origins.

To be seen

Piazza del Campo
Just called "il  Campo", heart of the town, it is considered the most beautiful square of the world.
It is surrounded by scenographic facades of medieval palaces, such as the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia .
In the Palazzo Pubblico, in gothic style, You can  admire the famous paintings "La Maestà", and "Guidoriccio da Fogliano", by the artist Simone Martini and in the Sala della Pace it is possible to visit the cycle of paintings "Buon Governo" by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, representation of a 14 th  century Siena.
Nearby the Palazzo Pubblico stands out the Torre del Mangia, from which it is possible to have a nice view of Siena and the surrounding countryside.

Duomo

In romanic-gothic style, it is characterized by a richly adorned facade and several masterpieces such as marble sculptures of Bernini.

Arezzo

30 kms far from Lucignano, originates from the etruscan and roman period, but it is during the medioeval period that it grows and important buildings, such as Pieve di Santa Maria, with its bell tower with bell mullion windows, are built during these centuries.
Walking around the town it is possible to admire other important specimen of medieval art, such as San Francesco, where it is kept the fresco “La Leggenda della Vera Croce” by Piero della Francesca, and San Domenico, on the homonymous square, where it is possible to see the magnificent crucifix,  juvenile masterpiece of Cimabue.
Up hill You will find a beautiful and unique square, Piazza Grande, surrounded by buildings of different periods, which sum up the main stages of the town’s history.
To be pointed  out an important monthly appointment,an antiquarian fair, which takes place in Piazza Grande and in the surrounding streets. (1st Sunday of every month)

San Gimignano

It is called the “town of beautiful towers” for the great number of towers which stand out on the roofes of this medieval town.
San Gimignano stands on a hill of the Valdelsa, in the middle of a spectacular countryside with  vineyards and olive- trees.The different height of the towers represented, during the medieval period, the power of the aristocratic families.
On the way to San  Gimignano, it is worth making a stop at Monteriggioni, military outpost of Siena.

Pienza

In a dominant position over the Val d’Orcia, birthplace of Pope Pio II, it is a precious example of a Renaissance town.
Pope Pio II decided  to transform his birthplace town in an ideal town, following the renaissance town planning utopia.
The ancient Corsignano was then called Pienza, that is to say town of Pio.
From its city walls it is possible to admire the amazing view of the "Crete Senesi" and of Monte Amiata.
In the neighbourhood Bagno Vignoni, ancient thermal village.

Cortona

On a hill dominating the Valdichiana, stands out Cortona, one of the most important Italian artistic centres, with etruscan,medieval and renaissance memories.
Famous artists, such as Beato Angelico, Luca Signorelli and  Pietro da Cortona,  operated here.
To be seen the Etruscan  Museum, where finds recovered in the area are kept.

Lucignano

The town has a particular elliptical shape, and around its city walls streets develop with concentric movement, giving the idea of a pleasant labyrinth.
This particular shape takes its origins from the original roman castrum.
The Museo Comunale and San Francesco preserve masterpieces of great value (Albero della Vita).
Distance: 3 km

Montepulciano

Medieval town, it is surrounded by city walls and it stands out on a hill which dominates with its 605 mt., the Valdichiana and the Val d’Orcia.
Besides the artistic beauties (Piazza Grande, Via del Corso, Basilica di San Biagio), the tourist is struck by the amazing view which reaches the region Umbria and Lake Trasimeno.
Montefollonico, a characteristic small town, is 10 km far from Montepulciano.

Firenze

Florence, with the highest concentration of artistic treasures, is the cradle of art par excellence.
The major Reinassance artists have left important examples of their art in this beautiful city.
Florence is itself the Reinassance, as the Cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Duomo, built on the project of Brunelleschi, witnesses. In piazza del Duomo it is possible to visit the Campanile of Giotto and the Battistero, adorned with unique mosaics.
But the Florentine art is not just Reinassance; even when Florence was a free "Comune" and then a Republic, art was very important for the Florentines, and this is evident if we consider the great number of romanic-gothic buildings: palazzo Vecchio, Orsanmichele, and the marvellous San Miniato al Monte, which towers above Firenze.
Florence has a great number of art collections: Uffizi, Bargello, Pitti Gallery and the Museum of the Opera del Duomo. In the surroundings to be seen Fiesole, of ancient Etruscan origins, from whose terrace it is possible to have a spectacular view on Florence.
